DAY 5

Day 5 - Tallinn

Wednesday, July 12th 2017, a boat trip and a new country.

4 AM. Backpacks ready and tickets in our hands, we headed towards the port. The ferry, which would take us to the other side of the sea, was here. Today, we would cross a part of the Baltic sea, to reach a new country… Estonia.

As Estonia is just a two hour boat trip from Helsinki, we decided that we would spend a day there to discover another country. We disembarked at the Tallinn port, the capital, it was 10 AM. On that day, the weather was mostly grey, so when we arrived at the first place we wanted to see, the St. Olaf Church, we could barely see the top as it was hidden by the fog. It made it seem huge.

We visited the many narrow streets of Tallinn, and eventually took one that led us to the Master’s Courtyard. It’s a nice and peaceful little place full of tiny details which gives a bohemian aspect to it.

The stroll continued in the old city, near the “Viru” gate.

Once we had eaten our lunch, we went to the “Freedom Square”, a large square full of History, which you’ll be able to read about on the plates. There, we also visited the St Mary’s Cathedral of Tallinn.

Further away, we found another cathedral, Alexander Nevsky’s one. This time, we strongly felt the russian architecture’s influence.

Then we took some height and watched the city from two viewing platforms: “Kohtuotsa” and “Patkuli”. Back when we set foot in Estonia, we instantly adored all of the detailed facades. It felt good to walk between them. So when we climbed up to see the city from above, the “love at first sight” was further confirmed. It was a mix of ancient and modern. The colors and murals of each building made this capital so pretty.

After that, we went down using the “Patkuli Stairs”, and walked along the ramparts until the “Danish King’s Garden”. A beautiful garden found inside the walls of stone and paved ground.

The day came to an end and it was time to get back on the boat; so we walked back to the port, and returned in Finland.
