DAY 10

Day 10 - Finland to... Home

Sunday, July 16th 2017, forests and beaches.

We woke up early this morning, so we could pack our stuff and be sure we wouldn’t forget anything. We had just spent our last “night” in Finland. Quote unquote night because we haven’t had a single “night”, whether it was in Sweden or in Finland. In fact, this phenomenon is named the “midnight sun”, a time when the sun doesn’t set, or barely does.

Today was day 20, the one we chose to end our adventure. This day would mark the end of a fabulous trip; one with a taste of muscle aches after walking a total of 293 kilometers from the dozens of forests and lakes that we had crossed. The result of 3139 moments captured, many laughs, but more importantly and above all, the result of our love.

The bus stop which would lead us to the airport was right next to our Airbnb. We had the time to capture a final instant with a picture, a way to say good bye. And we took that bus, with our luggage, holding the weight of all the souvenirs and memories we brought back with us.

We arrived at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport, quickly completed the administrative details, and headed towards our departure gate. We embarked and enjoyed the beautiful moments in the clouds. We then landed in Paris for a stop, and a few hours later another plane took us to the Geneva airport, our final destination.

It felt odd to hear the french language everywhere again. The sensation of being back home felt weird too. It took us a couple of days to get accustomed with the night again, and many mornings where we had to realize that we wouldn’t wake up to explore a country…

It was an incredible adventure, our first one alone as a couple. It was the opportunity to share our love for adventure. The opportunity to appreciate travelling together, and to feel the need to reiterate the experience elsewhere.

To conclude, we’d say Sweden was our crush, but that doesn’t mean Finland was worse. We just felt frustrated at times in Finland because of the many private properties which prevented us from exploring the way we wanted to. It is important to know that our only means of locomotion were public transport and walking, and thus we might have not been able to reach the best locations because of the distance. What’s also important to know is that during our trip, we quickly realized that “classic tourism” wouldn’t suit us. You probably noticed it while reading this blog, we often looked for places where we would be alone with nature, without being surrounded by tourists and buses. That’s why for our foreseeable trips we plan on staying further away from the capitals and mainly spend time discovering broader areas.

Well, our travelling story ends here, but this blog is here to stay, as a trace of our best memories. It will stay here to remind us the chance we had, to be able to escape far from the routine. And it may also stay to host more adventures… Who knows ?
